In the future one of my goals is to become a game reviewer of a magazine, why not practice early? I would like to review all the games that come out for the 360 in detail. We could maybe help people decide if they should buy a game or not. So if anyone is interested in becoming a reviewer just pm me and we can talk some more about it.

Im game if this site wants to add a review system. I think there should be a panel of 3 official reviews per game though, to give multiple views. Monsters?

lazl0w
March 14th, 2006, 09:33 PM
Yeah Angelz, thats what I was thinking, we could have like a panel and all give our opinions on the game and we could average the score of all three to maybe put in a list or something, if one of the monsters could reply that would be great...

You realy do have a thing for that King guy don;t you? Does your wife no about your "fling" with him yet?

And i'd liek to do the interview thing, but I have not gotten a responce from the monsters yet about it so I have to asume that its a no go on it. O well I tried. Perhaps they just like me.

We've actually thought about the game reviews, and it's something we're still not sure on. We don't want to take the site to far off of our main mission, which is bringing you achievements and tips on how to get them. It could still happen in the future, but for right now we've got to hold off on it.

haha, thanks

Actually i was thinking about a review system for the site at work the other day, but it worked abit different from this one.

It would be linked to the suggestion by Steve Vice about being able to log into the actual front part of this site, once logged in, each game would have a rating bar on the page with there achivements listed, and people can simply rate it a score (i suggest a sliding bar type like they use on Gamespot) and then each rating is put with each other giving the mean rating of everyones score. And with a sliding bar, people could also change there score, like if they then played the game through abit more, and thought it deserved a lower / higher score the more you play it. I thought this would be easier than everyone writing what they think and clogging up space, but maybe one user can still write about a game, up to the monsters.

The only problem i saw with this is that a game like Oblivion would be getting 10 before it's even released (i know most of you lot are sensible, but some people WOULD do it :P)

So then i thought of maybe there is a way of only letter users rate games that they've got listed in there gamecard as being played, so at least that way there rating is at least being based on the fact they've stuck the game in there 360!!!

I don't know if thats even possible though with my basic net knowledge, and even if that all is i know it's alot of hard work for the monsters, but it's just a idea i came up with and if it was implemented well i think it would be a nice addition that doesn't involve too much input from each user.

Anyway i've babbled on for too long now! see ya!

Wow Barry, that sounds like a great idea. Yeah, I don't know if or how they could get your games off of your gamercard and only allow you to vote on those games.

How about this, only people that have a certain qualifier first can vote? You know, like when you have at least 10 out of 50 or 15 out of 50 achievements, then you can vote on games.

lazl0w
March 15th, 2006, 11:08 AM

NamelessForever
March 15th, 2006, 12:13 PM
Yeah, it might be fun, but it's not a challenge. Most gamers want it to be achallenge to play a game, at least I do. You know, even though Madden has like the easiest gamerpoints to get, I still enjoy playing Madden just cause it's a football game, you know.

NamelessForever
March 15th, 2006, 12:25 PM
True, I would agree that getting that one achievement is a little pain in the a*s, but aside from that, it is a decent football game overall, even though they took out some really nifty things that were in the '05 version. Well, the '07 version comes out in August and I already have it reserved.

Fall3n Angelz
March 15th, 2006, 11:38 PM
The reviews could simply include an achievement portion. This site is still in its infancy, but I think this could help it expand a little and also give gamers an extra reason to come here. Good reviews are hard to find, and NO site stresses achievements like we have the opportunity to do. If the monsters need a little extra help dealing with reviews, Im sure Crono can stop posting every 1.7 seconds to help out...

NamelessForever

Korenaren
March 16th, 2006, 02:51 PM
I have 2 different comments:

1st: I don't think we need another site offering up Game Reviews...aren't there enough already to get an idea if you want the game or not? I could see this site averaging other sites' reviews (like Gamerankings.com), or linking directly to other friendly sites' reviews. This could even be an opportunity to partner with other 'Review' sites and have them link back to this site for all their Achievement needs.

2nd comment: I can see some of our prolific posters (requiring a minimum Forum Achievements is a good idea)...posting 'Reviews' on the Achievements built into each game. For example:
* Do the achievements in this game challenge the player?
* Do the achievements in this game make you want to keep playing the game?
* Are the achievements in this game cool? Stupid = Play game for 10 hours. Cool = Survive 60 seconds without firing. Whatever/you get the idea.
* Do the achievements in this game make you play the game differently?
* Are the achievements too difficult/easy? in terms of gamer skill, and in term of required hours.
* etc.

I think this idea may offer a new twist to general Review sites...I would read them. I realize you can infer this information if you read all the forums on a regular basis...but an actual section for official Achievement Reviews would be pretty cool...where we could find the reviewer we match up with and compare to.

This actually reminds me of the Gamespot (I think) recent article on Easy 6000 points to Earn...kind of like that, but for every game.

^good, well thought out post...kudos..

Fall3n Angelz
March 17th, 2006, 01:05 AM
Yes, it was a very well-though-out post, but Id have to disagree somewhat. What he/she suggested can be implemented into a review system, but doing solely what they suggested will minimize the amount of content available on this site.

A smaller amount and variety of content means a smaller amount of interest, and therefore, it is beneficial to the site to expand when possible without becoming a site about how to cook lemon meringue pie or something equally off-topic.

Not every gamer is going to play every game. Some will want to know what games are worth playing, both quality and achievement-wise. This could be the site that uniquely offers them that perspective. Seriously, could it hurt?

lazl0w
March 17th, 2006, 01:25 AM
True, variety of content will increase traffic within the site, and I know for a fact that when game releases are quicker that I wont be buying every game, so I'm guessing other gamers would like to know what each game has to offer, like stated above, gameplay and achievment wise.

Well even though they said know. I've decided to do reviews on my own. the links to my newest while the games are not new are in my sig. Just trying to help u guys out. I like doign them. Theres more on the way but my sig can only hold 3 links. So my sig will hold my 3 newest.

Korenaren

How about just posting your link in the Forum for that particular game?

You could obviously do more than 3. And you would get more visibility that way. When I am researching the purchase of a game, I check the Forums here to see what's being discussed about it.

All inquires regarding the review team should be made towards Fall3n Angelz. He is the official team leader for this new group we are setting up. Group membership will still be handled by one the Monsters. Do NOT plan on joining this team if you don't want to take it seriously or your grammatical skills leave something to be desired. This group will be limited and only the best of the best will make it, mostly according to what Fall3n thinks.

Further details will be made at a later date.

April 8th, 2006, 09:06 PM
Hello, while we wait for our Review board, here are a few guidelines for people interested in being a part of the Review Team. If you have any questions, PM me. Thanks!

Reviews
There will be 3 reasonably short and to-the-point reviews per game. This is to give readers multiple perspectives, obviously. The achievement portion of the review should include if the achievements are fun, how long they would take and how difficult they can be, and of course, not how, but if you can boost or cheat your way through.

Grading
People are going to want an honest opinion. Oblivion was amazing yes, but if you give every game that you like a 10, what will you do when something better comes out? If someone plays the game you gave a 10 and you really meant to give it a 7 or 8, its going to hurt your reputation as a reviewer, and the reviews for this site in general. Basically, think what you would give it in a week, a month, or even 6 months from now, when the excitement of going invisible and summoning a Storm Atronauch in the middle of a Necromancer Lair wears off...

Spelling & Grammar
This is not Gamefaqs, or Gamespot, or your personal fan page. a360p is very serious about their reviews and as such the writing level of any review member should reflect a professional quality. If you send in anything with errors, I will send them back. I also dont have time to give you a 3rd grade spelling lesson everytime you were too lazy to proof-read and hit the spellcheck button.

Format
A brief introduction sentence or two that sums up your opinion of the game. Then the review is broken into sections, where you can give generally a 1-3 paragragh mini-review on that portion of the game. Those sections are...
Gameplay, Graphics, Sound, Multiplayer (when applicable), Lasting Appeal, and Achievements. Each of these sections gets its own score, but unlike the final score, its only by 0.5's (6.0, 7.5, 9.5, etc.).
Then a couple key postives and negatives (just a sentence for each), and your final score (not an average).

Fall3n Angelz

DYNASTY WARRIORS 5: EMPIRES

Lasting Appeal 5.0

Yes. The layout is just to show you generally how we want it, and the guidelines above it explain that each section should have something like 1-3 paragraphs.

Try to be straight to the point, and leave out useless information like "Dynasty Warriors 5, the 5th in the Dynasty Warriors series..." But also try to keep it interesting and dont just drop bits of information one after another. Try to weave it all together smoothly.

Most people will just skim anyway, so were trying to get bite size reviews that arent going to bore all us gamers with ADD.

Okay, make sure to use the format on the previous page and dont rush it. Your first review is the one that decides if you are a good enough writer, and if I or the Monsters dont approve, you kind of shot yourself in the foot (Im not sure if thats the proper analogy, but you get the idea).

It might be a little longer to actually get the reviews on the site due to the fact that *hide exact reason for surprise*.

What you could do for each game is have a "Staff Score" and a "Player Score" or something and have people vote on a scale of 1-10 of how well they liked the game.

Thats an idea, but that isnt really on my end as it would require a program to be implemented.

I think Team xbox has that thing. Theres the reviews score and people rate it. Problem is like Fall said you have to implament a program or hack I guess into the boards so u can only vote once for obvious reasons. I like the idea but theres problems with it to.

I'm working on this review. Now I'm doing it on Oblivion. Yes I'm sure everyone is but when you spend 200 hours on a game its hard not to. My question is since oblivion is such a LARGE game with some much in it. I'd have to assume it would be a larger review. I find myself trying to cram certain things in to the sections of the review. Now I just want to make sure that if this review seems a bit larger then what you would expect from another game like PGR it won't count against me. It?s just the sheer mass of the game that makes it this way.

Haha, I found myself doing the same. My review started out rather long, trying to include everything I ever thought about the game. But I am trying to discipline myself to only say what matters. If people wanted to read 5 or 10 page reviews, theres a million other sites and magazines out there already.

a360p reviews are more like cliffs notes, straight to the point and only include what you really feel matters. What would you want to know about the game if you hadnt already played it? Almost like a FAQ. Leave the poetry and wordy descriptions to shakespeare...

Hello everyone. Kobalt has submitted his Oblivion review, and I thought it would serve as a good tool for getting people on the right track. Here it is, and following it will be some notes and corrections. Remember, the Monsters (and most likely the readers) are not interested in anything with any errors, this isnt an English class.

From the start I was skeptical Of Oblivion. I had never been much of an RPG fan to start with so I didn’t think this would change my mind. From the very start I was immersed in a world of gaming I never new existed.

Game play
Long, immense, consuming. Those are all words I would use to describe the stories involved throughout the life span of Oblivion. I say life span because of the amount of hours that can be piled into this game just to finish the game 100%. With 4 guild quest story lines not to mention the epic main quest there’s no doubt in my mind anyone can find something in this game. Whether you want to be an evil warrior and blunder your way to victory, or be a quiet lowly mage and help people. Either way you want to go there’s something in this game for you.
Right out of the gate I was impressed by the game play involved in something this large. I expected something pretty good but with the size of the world I wasn’t expecting anything close to what I found. However, like all great things there has to be something to counter it. This turned out to be the loading times on the game. While there acceptable with how long and large the game is, it’s still hard to swallow in this day and age. Sometimes, but not all the time this can be fixed with a simple cache wipe for the game.
Oblivion’s magic system I found to be a lot of fun when it comes to conjuration and destruction, but left little to be desired when it came to enchanting weapons and armor. It’s a nifty little feature in the game, but the novelty wears off pretty quick. The levels you need to be at to get some of the high powered enchantments is a bit ridiculous to anyone who isn’t going to play the game for hundred’s of hours. My opinion would be to go the straight up destruction magic way, and burn, freeze, and electrocute your way to immortality.

Score: 9

Graphics

Oblivion is impressive graphically to say the least. My suggestion however is to play this game on an HDTV if available. Unlike many 360 games this game does take advantage of an HDTV’s abilities. You should know that weather it’s on a regular TV or an HDTV you will be impressed either way. Only real gripe with people might be the draw distance problem out doors. Things look a bit blobby at far distances. This is totally understandable. If it wasn’t like this then you would have loading times in the minutes not seconds.

Score: 9

Sound

The game sound didn’t impress me as much as I had hoped it would. It’s still good but not as epic as I first thought it would be. Each item in the game has its own sound just as walking does in each type of boots. The variety of sounds you will encounter in fights are pretty good, however the in game music is pretty stale and one sided. There’s one music tone for when nobody is a round and another when enemies are close. Don’t expect much more then that.

Score: 7.5

Lasting appeal

This game has more lasting appeal then any game I’ve encountered before. It’s a single player game with no multiplayer what’s so ever, that right there makes it that much more impressive. Most games these days bite down and are carried by there multi player aspects and not the single player experience. This game throws that right out the window. The game itself can take a couple hundred hours to complete.
After that the entire world is going to be open to you. You can do what you want and when you want with very little backlash. People have come up with some very innovative ways to keep themselves busy after the games 191 quests are complete.

Score: 9.5

Achievements

There are 50 achievements worth 1000 points. There all pretty straight forward. You’re not going to find some crazy achievements that are impossible to get. The games not designed that way. Simply play through the main quest and the 5 main faction quests to rack up a cool 1000 points. If anything gets a bit to difficult there’s a nifty little difficulty slider bar you can move up or down depending on your own personal way of playing.
I was kinda of disappointed in the achievements since nothing in the game really is an achievement by normal standards. I felt they were just thrown in for another easy but time consuming 1000 points.

Score: 7.5

Positives & Negatives

+ Replay value is unmatched by any game out there.
+ Story lines will keep you stuck to your controller for many hours.
+ HD graphics are mind blowing at times.

- Loading times can be killer.
- Sound leaves some to be desired.
- Achievements lack the definition of Achievement.

Overall Score: 8.5

From the start I was skeptical Of Oblivion. I had never been much of an RPG fan to start with so I didn’t think this would change my mind. From the very start I was immersed in a world of gaming I never new existed.

A couple things: You want to avoid the use of “Iâ€?, especially so much. Rather than “I had never…â€? you could say things like “Even if you’ve never been an RPG fan…â€?

Also, the use of “From the startâ€? twice in three sentences is rather redundant, not to mention it’s redundant. Being redundant can lead to uninteresting redundant reviews, so avoid redundancy.

Even though spellcheck gets the easy ones, the fact that “newâ€? (knew) and “gameplayâ€? (which happens to be one word, and is such in the format I provided) are incorrect shows that the writer didn’t put too much effort into proofreading. And that’s just the first 4 lines…

Finally, the format provided wasn’t a suggestion, its there for a purpose. Neither myself nor the monsters want to do anything with a submitted review other than say “Wow, that was goodâ€? and post it on the site. We’re not going to format, spellcheck, critique it, or teach people how to write.

Nobody likes criticism, but a360p official reviews are to be of a professional nature. If you have a fan review or something you don’t really take all that seriously, there will most likely be a place for that as well. This just isn’t it.

All seriousness aside, this is an opportunity to flex your creative muscle and be a major part of this flourishing site. It can be fun and rewarding, but only if you have the required writing skills. If you don’t, try not to take it personally. Now that I feel like I should be the one named Monster, if anyone would still like to submit their reviews, I'll be here!

Fall3n, I am going to setup the review board for you. Check your PMs a little later for it. It will be a private board, so you will be able to decide who can access it or not.

To get back to what I said on page 6 you could possibly have the grading system with the same function that powers the "Polls". I don't know if it would work but I would be cool.

Thats certainly an idea, and one I hope the monsters will consider. We'll see!
