The game play is very similar to Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry, in the way that you are playing across a primarily linear level, hacking and slashing your way through countless enemies.
However, the "cut" system separates this from those titles by a long shot in my opinion. Depending on your personal gaming style would answer the question to the title.
If you are just in it for some quick points, I have a total of 12 hours playtime in and almost have 700. You do not necessarily need to master the cutting system to play through on easy. In fact, I believe button mashing, hope for the best could probably get you through the entire game on the easy because you regain health for every kill you acquire. For those not wishing to spend lots of time getting really good at the fighting, I would tell you to rent it.
But the game has much for the hardcore gamers as well. The cutting system lets you slice any part off your enemies body. It is as challenging as much as it is fun. Like I said the easier difficulty rewards you with health after every kill. Hard ONLY gives you health when you decapitate an enemy, or cut them down the middle directly through their eyes. Sounds simple enough, but if you slice the guy and manage to snip his fingernail off while decapitating them - it does not count. I have not tried Hard yet, since I have nearly 1500 kills, and only 110 decaps and 45 between the eyes I do not think I'm ready yet.
For the hard core gamers who do not mind spending some time mastering the controls, I would say buy it. Beyond that the visual style is amazing, the humor (very adult) is great, and for those who watched the anime........the Android battle is EPIC.
