I finally beat this challenge this morning after much stress over the last 3 days.. 8-0!
This is how I did it..
Australia 4-2-4
Vidmar
Moore
Popovic
Neill
Bresciano
Grella
Cahill
Emerton
Kewell
Elrich
Solomon Islands 4-3-3
Billy
Konofilm
G.Abba
J.Molea
P.Boe
M.Ruhasia
G.Omokirio
G.Suri
B.Suri
M.Houkarawa
Defense Pressure the ball
Attack Counter-attack
The "chip" technique (LT+B) works really well head on.. I scored 4 of my 5 goals doing this. My advice is to do it just before the penalty spot. I also used LT+X a lot to whip in a low cross, this often gave me an additional shot on goal. Also, a good cornering technique is to aim fully toward the near post (go all the way to the left or right depending on which corner you're crossing from), and have the power at about 85%. More often than not, you will have a header on goal and this is how I got my 5th.

I have all the other challenges (apart from the Finals of course) done except for this one!! I'll give that formation a go later 'cause I really would like to get 1000/1000 on this game.
Best I've managed so far was 5-0. :\

I'm in the same boat, I keep ending up with 10+ shots on target and haven't done better than 5-0. People keep suggesting formations for the opposing team but I see no way to change that. I am sure if I could get solomon to have a formation that didnt' have a billion of defenders I would be fine.

Use the 'Team Management' option on the main menu (not in match). Change opposition squad as you wish, save the squad data to storage device and enter the challenge. If the changes have not taken effect, try loading the squad data and re-enter it..

I'm gonna try this 2night!
You also got rid of Viduka? :D He is so damn slow haha!
Why didn't you put Solomon on 3-4-3 ??
Did you score alot by a trough pass? (and then chip the ball)
Or did you use your wingers to cross the ball?

Yes, Viduka is pants in this game.. Trying to get him through on goal is pointless, as the defenders just waltz straight back up to him. Believe it or not, 4-3-3 is much easier to beat than 3-4-3 because of the way that the players are positioned in those respective formations..
I scored mainly with the through pass, and normal pass just off from the centre of the pitch in either direction. The defenders tended not to read the pass, and ran beyond my player giving me a bit of a run on goal. Take it to an imaginary line just before the penalty spot, and chip it over the keeper.
Crosses tend not to be as successful in this game (unlike RTFWC), but if you use a low cross and get a player near the front post, it is possible to score.!

Last night i finally beat the challange!! i started dancing in my living room when i scored the final goal!! haha!
i adjusted there rooster with other players, and changed there tactics to 3-4-3..
then i just waited for them to attack, and i didn't run after them like an idiot. I just waited untill they were near my box. Then when i received the ball back, i just kicked it long to my (4) strickers.. turned away from the defender and put in the trough ball to my other striker and went straight for the goal, and lobbed the keeper! 4 times in a row!
so bassicly, the counterstrike is what helped me ALOT!
and as you said, don't put Viduka in your team!
tonight i'm off to the finals! and hopefully the 500 points! (if i can beat Brazil :D )
Thnx and good luck everybody!

This looks very similar to the set-up I used to beat this challenge. Except I think I had the Solomon Islands on 3-4-3
I didn't use the chip technique though. I find that really difficult. What I would typically do is send a through-pass out to the forward on the left or right wing and have him sprint behind the defenders. I nearly always did this on the right wing out of habit. Anyway, after he had cleared the defense I'd have him run in diagonally towards the box and then while he's running diagonally I'd use Y to send a through-pass across to the forward that was running down the centre. No need to worry about offside once you're behind the defense. Then with that guy I'd just tap B once I got close to the keeper.
Another tip concerning corners: It's best to have someone in the sixyard box. Just use the d-pad to bring up the tactics menu and choose flood the box. After you have selected that, if there's no guy in the right position, just go and select flood the box again. Keep selecting that until you like where the players are. Every time you go to the tactic menu, the camera zooms in on a player, and after you select a tactic the players will have change positions randomly. Doesn't really matter if you go for flood-the-box but that's what i used......aim just like Oblivion Knights says and double tap B for the header.

I played this challenge for 6 hours without much strategy and only managed 5-0 a couple times. I then employed this advice and it still took me over 4 hours but I got 5-0 several times and 6-0 five times.
When I finally beat it:
48' - corner from left (bottom of screen) set Attack to Flood the Box, had man standing in 6 yard box. Aimed all the way left and powered 70-75%. Double tapped B and he headed it in.
56' - corner from right (top of screen) set Attack to Flood the Box, had man standing in 6 yard box. Aimed all the way left (player's right) and powered 70-75%. Amazed that the goalie didn't punch it. Double tapped B and headed it in.
71' - opponent decided to clear ball, giving me a left corner. Did exact same thing as 48'.
80' - took ball at own 18 and sprinted up center - two opposing midfielders began to converge and passed a thru-ball to striker for a breakaway. Contemplated the chip shot but was only scoring those about 1/3 of time so got to the penanlty marker and fired away. GOAL! in left side of net.
83' - Solomon Islands scores. I'm not even upset. Sure I've played about 200 games by now and only gave up a handful of goals, but I know how evil this game is.
83'- 90' - muttering to self to just get the ball off them
90' - breakaway similar to 83' - again contemplated the chip but decided not to lose on a weak shot. The ball scrapes the left post and goes in. Final score 8-1.

Have got to the dreaded Aussie Rules challenge and the best I have managed is 6-0 once - I seriously lost my cool when I hit the post with about 2 minutes to go!!!
Will try taking Viduka out of my team and changing my formation, hopefully that will do the trick...
Also, does anyone else find that the Solomon Islands are way too good at playing keep ball? They seem to be able to keep it for ages, which is highly frustrating when you only need to score another 1 or 2 goals!

I changed my formation to 4-2-4 yesterday and managed to win 8-0 fairly quickly, without making any changes to the other team. Woo hoo!!! :)
I dropped Viduka (which worked a treat!), and tried to ensure that the players I brought in were much quicker than the original starting 11.
The players I used were as follows:
M. Schwarzer
D. Tiatto
C. Moore
T. Popovic
L. Neill
M. Bresciano
T. Cahill
A. Elrich
B. Emerton
H. Kewell
A. Thompson
I initially started with the counter-attack tactic, but changed to wing play half-way through the second half. I mainly tried to play balls through the middle so I could use the chip-shot on the keeper (at least two of my goals came this way).
I hope the above helps anyone else who is struggling!

OMG i just managed to win this 1 minute ago. my final score was 8-0.
Thanks a lot for your tips on the players list and formations.
I agree with the first part but disagree with most of the second part because I've tried them and they didn't work.
For Australia, I used the same player list and formation as the thread starter. I also used Counter-attack, pressing ball and flood box (for corner kick only)
For the player list of Solomon Islands, I followed the thread starter's advice and just switched all their defenders with their substitute strikers and their mid-fielders with their substitute defenders.
Now for the things I totally disagree with because they don't work.
However, for the formation of Solomon Islands, I totally disagree with the thread starter. Only allowing Solomon to have 3 defenders at the back instead of four makes it much easier for through-passes. This is because the Solomon back players will form a triangle that points towards Australia's goal and this gives the space for the through pass.
I retried a lot of times using your 4-3-3 formation for Solomon Islands but completed the challenge in one try using 3-4-3 for Solomon Islands.
And here's the other stuff I did.
1. The third method I used was sending the ball to my forwards/strikers and then using the chip-shot. There are two ways to do this and it depends on the situation.
If the Solomon players are near your penalty area and the defenders on the extreme sides steals the ball, just pump the ball up by using the B button. Then use your forwards/strikers and sprint diagonally to receive the ball. Do note that it is very important to change the direction of the D-pad right before your striker gets the ball and make sure that it points towards the goal. This is because when sprinting to get the ball, your striker is running towards the sidelines and you don't want the striker to run out and get the ball out. It also ensures that your striker pushes the ball towards the goal so that he will run towards the goal.
If the Solomon players are near your penalty area and the defenders in the middle steals the ball and if there's empty space in the middle for you to run into, run into it (please also look at the minimap to see if there are any players in your way) and then hold the Y button for a full-power through-pass.
If the Solomon players are NOT attacking or near your penalty area and their defenders are way back close to their penalty box, forget about using the chip-shot because your striker/forward will never be able to receive the ball and run towards goal. If this is the case, you should use my second method. (In fact my second method is the one that I try the most since Solomon is somehow able to flood the middle of their side of the field with their players)
Then try as much as possible to reach the penalty spot and STOP sprinting right before you reach the penalty spot. Once you are on the penalty spot, hold the Left Trigger and tap the B button for a chip shot. Do not hold the B button. This gave me two out of the five goals in this game.
If you are unable to reach the penalty spot but are at an angle towards the goal, you should still do a chip-shot BUT aim at the far post. The ball should either get into the goal at the far post OR the keeper deflects the ball. If the keeper deflects the ball, make sure your other striker/forward SPRINTS (since its a 4-2-4 formation, you have two strikers) and then makes the finishing touch. Your second striker should reach the ball before the goal keeper recovers. This gave me two out of the five goals in this game.
--------------------
2. The second method i use is sending the ball through the wings and then crossing into the opponent's penalty box. There are two ways to get pass the opponent players.
The first way is use one-two passes, starting from the player closer to the sideline passing to the player closer to the middle. The second way is to use the player on the sideline to run backwards to lure the Solomon players away and then pass through the space between them and the sideline to bypass them.
And then there are two ways to cross that I feel works well.
First, start pressing the X button once you pass the penalty box line (an imaginary line) and cross diagonally forward (towards the goal) and into the box.
Second method is to run to the goal line and then cross diagonally backwards (away from the goal) and into the box.
If I know I can't get a cross because the opponent can outrun my player, I try to force a corner kick.
--------------------
3. It's rather easy to force a Corner kick for your team. Yes force it. I do this when I know my winger is running down the line but can cross over. So what I do is i delibrately run close to the goal line and cross my ball, aiming at the defender. This causes the ball to deflect off the defender and give me a corner kick.
--------------------
4. For corner kicks, I don't always aim to the maximum towards the goalpost. I look at the penalty box first. If I have players who are standing infront of the defenders, I tend to aim towards the goalpost slightly (1 or 2 light presses of the left stick) BUT I don't make it max because sometimes the ball goes too close to the keeper and he catches it first. For this case, the strength I use is about 70-80%.
If my players are surrounded, I aim such that the white scope is a tiny little distance away from the goal/out-of-play line. Then I use a strength of about 50% (so that the ball lands closer to the side where the corner kick was taken) and this causes my player to run off from the opponent defender to receive the ball and get a header in.
Do note that you should be prepared to make a second shot if the keeper blocks the ball but doesn't catch it.
I had 1 goal this game using this method.
