Do you think it is better to have it vertical or horizontal? I think that vertical helps the heat, but horizontal read the games easier what do you guys think?

I have mine standing up. I also like how the 360 knows whether you have it standing up or laying down. That's prety cool..

I prefer mine laying down because if I wanna stand it up it would have to be on the floor but laying down I can just tuck it into the bottom of the TV stand, plus I don't have to worry about knocking it down or anything. :P

having it standing also increases the risk of the disk getting jammed in the machine

Horizontal, I used to have a PS2 standng up and I knocked it over. :(
What do you mean the 360 know whether its standing or horizontal? What does it change?

Go experiment. Keep your 360 on without a disc in the drive (so it doesn't scratch or something) and turn it over, looking at the power ring ;).

My 360 was freezing laying down and getting too hot so I stood it up.

Horizontal to protect my considerable investment. Vertical looks better but I want it to play well more importantly.

I have mine right against a little wooden chest thing so it's safe. :D It would be easily knocked over with wired controllers though while playing something that ****es you off.

This is an old topic, but I'm going to toss my 2 cents in since I just switched.
Originally, I had my 360 in the vertical position which I think looks better and fits my AV setup better. I've been having some problems reading disks, though (mostly rentals which can be pretty banged up) and that DVD player is frickin' LOUD. A few days ago I put it in the horizontal position and now it's much quieter. Dunno if my games will load better, but the decrease in noise is substantial. I haven't seen it overheat in either position so I don't know if that's going to be a problem or not.
I've had my PS2 in the vertical position for years and it's never given me any trouble. It's pretty quiet and reads disks just fine. I think the 360 might have more trouble since the textures are higher resolution so it has to stream more content off the DVD than the PS2 did.

I haven't had that happen on either the PS2 or the 360 though I'm extra careful to make sure the disk is really in the tray before closing it. I played more Tomb Raider again last night and it's a lot quieter when the unit is placed horizontal. That game's a rental so it's got a sticker on it, which I think unbalances the disks a bit.

I want to hear it, does anybody know for sure. I just bought Fears and I do not want it to ruin if I run it sideways.

I don't think this is a problem. There's no vents leading to it and hard drives can get a LOT hotter than the HDD on the 360 ever does.

Some people abbreviate hard disk as HD. MS just puts HDD (hard disk drive) on the top of the 360 so I used that.

I keep it horizontal. It's safer that way. Having it vertical opens up the possibility of it tipping over, and considering what I've heard about disc damage from a tip over, I don't wanna take that chance.
