I don't know if I'd call Zelda an RPG, more like an action/adventure. Out of those, Final Fantasy, if only because of sheer number of games, although I did like the Tales series.

Here are my thoughts. They are all too close, and different, for me to have a clear choice winner.

The Legend of Zelda - Great action puzzle stuff, but not as much RPG as the others really. Great games though, I really like the old 2d ones, can't wait for Twilight Princess.
Final Fantasy - Really good in 2d versions. 3d is good as well, but it just doesn't have the appeal I want really. Haven't played 12, so maybe the actiony stuff will make me want it.
Dragon Quest - Never played one... :P
The Elder Scrolls - Wow, I loved number 4, hated number 3, and the only other I have played is Morrowind. Truthfully, the one that kept me more interested of all of these is Oblivion, so if it wasn't so close, this would get it.
Phantasy Star - Only limited play of PSO, demo in PSU, but it was really fun. Only thing keeping me away is the monthly fee.
Kingdom Hearts - Never played
Xenosaga/Xenogears - Never played
KOTOR - Wow, I loved the story in them, but the action wasn't really great in my opinion. Like an MMORPG without the fun stuff, like other people. Fun game overall for single player, but it really was like a souped up Star Wars Galaxies offline for me. I loved SWG, but grinding online is a whole lot different than on a game.
Star Ocean - Never played.

My own: Pokemon, yes pokemon. Those games were very deep, and although I haven't played one in a while, the originals were very well done.

Dynasty Warriors is kind of sort of not really an RPG, but kind of because you equip items and level up and things like that,

i love the monster hunter series..... Yes i know its for playstation 2 and the PSP but there are brilliant RPG's. Anyone who has a PSP try out monster hunter freedom.....its great :D

Seriously. Chrono Cross is in my Top 10 Games (mainly because it's my fiancee's favorite game EVAR, and she turned me onto it). My son is named Serge, for christ sake. (That was all her. I wanted something more....normal, but Serge sounds cool.)

I am fairly partial (i.e. a closet fanboy) to the Kingdom Hearts games, but I wouldn't call it best RPG...

Did anyone else ever play Sierra's "Hero's Quest" on PC? They were made in the early 90's I think. They made four or five of them and they remade the first one. I have tried to find it for my computer for forever. I loved those games.

Anyways, I like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. I like Final Fantasy the best though. I haven't played many of them. And, I haven't even played the ones that people consider the best ones. I loved Final Fantasy X. It was like a movie. My wife used to love when I played that game because she would sit and watch it like a movie.

I need to play the others sometime.

For me its The Zelda games, I've completed all of them apart from the DS and Wii ones. I even bought the older games :) Ocarina Of Time was probably my favourite game ever.

Anyone else here play ShadowRun for the Sega Genesis? (does anyone even know what a SegaGenesis is) It has one of the best leveling systems, Karma. It doesn't really qualify as a "series", however. How about Ultima.

Lord British FTW! Ultima was probably the second RPG I played on a PC (the first were the old D&D games like Pool of Radiance). Classic series, I spent many an hour playing Ultima IV, I think I still have the old discs and manual floating around somewhere.

Anyways, more back on topic: is anyone else devastated like I am that Phantasy Star received 0 votes? :( The first time my 360 RROD'd I fired up an emulator on my PC and played the original PS1 almost nonstop while my 360 was being fixed.

Because there is not a catagory for Action games, so it gets lumped into the RPG slot. MUA definitely is not a sports or FPS game. Define a suitable catagory and I will nominate it.

LOL, I know what you mean. I'm still slowly playing through it. I play a level a week or so, and it's still causes my hand to cramp up. :p

It is a good game to throw in occasionally for some mindless slashing though.

No .. I got near 1k .. Was like one level off and my game crashed .. I still can't get over it .. Brilliant game ... Would play it solid all day .. But may pick it up .. Want to get graw 2 soon.

I've never liked FF, or any JRPG's for that matter. Games like Oblivion though, to me are masterpieces. Definitely my favorite series thus far. Mass Effect was cool too.

Warning - Blue Dragon is aimed more at the younger players.
Final Fantasy 11 sucks. IMHO. Video quality isn't that great, and let's not forget that you have to pay a 'subscription fee' to their domain to play - YUCK!!!

I do wonder how many people have played the earlier ones though, alot of people that seem to know the SO series only know SO3 and the remake they put on the PSP.

SO2 was almost unbeatable in my eyes.
