Anyone have any idea if a hard drive crashes do you lose all your achievements? I have everything backed up on a memory card (except PDZ and DOA - which won't transfer) but say my drive crashes can I load my saved files onto a new hard drive and reclaim all my hard work or will I just have the save files and no achievements?

As long as you've logged into xbox live with your achievements, they are stored online and you can recover them the same way you'd recover an xbox live account.
If you haven't logged on to xbox live, then yes, they would be totally lost unless you saved your gamer profile to a memory card. I don't think you can save xbox game files and such things to a hard drive, but if you can, that's really kool and I'd like to know how.
As far as I know, you can only use external hard drives for music and photo files when hooking up via USB to the xbox 360. In future, with Windows Vista, I hope for much more flexibility. Not many people have media center PC's, so that's why I'm not really mentioning that although I do know it allows you to stream TV and videos to your x360.

Thanks. Most of my achievements I did get while hooked up to xbox live, some were offline and just say aquired. I didn't start my account until this year so I wasn't sure how that worked.

can you still log onto xbox live and everything if you have a 3rd party HDD?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. The OS isn't on the hard drive so you should be just fine.
Also, if you are daring, there is no reason to wait (and pay extra money) for an aftermarket HD. Just buy a big ol' hard drive from the store and unscrew the xbox's HD case and swap 'em out.
On second thought, take the case apart first, they MIGHT have gone with an ATA drive, but I would guess that it's just regular IDE.

No I read somewhere that the hard drive isn't the standard size, and it was custom made for the xbox 360. Whether it's ATA or IDE it wouldn't be hard to get something like that third party, just that if it doesn't fit in the case thing and look all nice I wouldn't want it anyhow. Wouldn't want some ugly metal thing sittin on top of my xbox360!

Hhmmm.. Now I'm getting tempted to bust out my screwdrivers.... Looking at the HD case it does look a bit small to hold a regular HD, but what about laptop size drives?
Of course, depending on the insides of the case that might be a bad idea too...

If I knew a way to get a bigger HDD in there without my system looking like a reject, I would be all over it in a flash. 13gb just doesn't cut it.

When I get home I'll take a look at the HD case and see if I've got the balls to try to crack it open. I modded my original xbox and was sweating bullets the entire time.

You are a daring guy to start to take apart the 360 since they still are hard to find on a shelf. My buddy bought two and parted them out on xboxscene and made a couple hundred, alot of people jumped all over the parts. I didn't think it would take long to develop a mod chip for these. I think the only downfall to modding the 360 is the fact you ideally would be working on 2 gamerscores which would kind of be a waste of time!

Only thing that you need to watch out for is if you have gamerpoints don't do account recovery or you will lose all of your achievements it will erase all of them.

Does it erase yoru game history as well? I actually kind of want to do that, I get so many random messages from people telling me to "get a life" and that I'm a "fat nerd" etc. Sometimes it's funny, but usually it's aggravating and I'd like to be able to start fresh, so to speak, and just start playing games that I like so my gamerscore only has cool games in it and not all the rubbish it has in it now...

And goodness knows there's a lot of rubbish in it now . Honestly, why pay 4 or 5 bucks for an arcade game that was from the 80's, and that you're only playing for 200 more gamerscore? That isn't for me. No way, money is too valuable.

Totally sorry about the double post, but I forgot.
You can move your profile to your memory card. Not sure if that has a negative effect or anything, but I know it can be done. I'm not sure if it works like the original Xbox, where you can carry around your GT on a memory card to play at a friend's house or something, but my recent game freezes are getting me worried so I'm moving everything to my Memory Card, at least what'll fit, that way I don't have to get really boring achievements again -_-.

I don't wanna back it up, I wanna get rid of it all!
And you better watch yourself mister! Reminding me for the money I wasted on krappy arcade games AND double posting! Oooooo I'm so upset

Naw, I don't mean back it all up! I mean back up some game saves you'd like to keep. There's no way I'd put almost any of those arcade games of yours in the keep pile. :D

That's what I was talking about, I want to erase all my gamerscore and start from scratch. That's what I was saying in one of my earlier posts. Then I could get all these dumb games off my list, and start working on all the wicked new games that are going to come out.

I heard someone say something about doing it by accident by "recovering" thier account. But I want confirmarion on what exactly that does. If it's going to erase my history, I want it to erase everything. I don't want it to just take away my points and still leave all the games in my game history just without poinnts or something. That would suck.

I've done it before as an attempt to get my multiplayer games working. It didn't do anything for me, at all. It didn't help my games and it didn't erase any of my gamerscore either. Sorry, I dunno how to do it.

My sub has like 7 months left on it. They say if I cancel, that I don't get a refund for the rest of the time. I remember I went through this before when I cancelled my original xbox live accoutn 4 months before it expired, they refused to give me a refund, so I just didn't cancel it til it was almost over. Even though I didn't use it either in those months as I sold my xbox and was playing WoW.
If I could get some money back for it, I would do that though.

Yeah, emails aren't that hard to come by. It takes like 20 seconds to get a new Yahoo one .
I get the reluctance to lose your old email for MSN, or Hotmail, if your'e paying for it. But still, 500 bucks more than covers it. And that's a lot of extra Oblivion crap...

okay what happened to me was i had an old account that didn't matter and my friend wanted to play on it i had already recovered it on my 360 and had about 300 gamerpoints. I recovered it and it erased all games played and all gamerpoints. But why would you want to do this. Think of all the time you wasted then.
Crono117
March 5th, 2006, 03:00 AM
Well then I'd have to tell everyone that I was changing my e-mail and all that. Plus, I get a lot of e-mail school and work related to this account with big files so I pay 30$ a year or something for the premium hotmail or whatever it is, so I'd have to like cancel that or sumthin. Meh, it all seems too much. You think someone would really buy it? Lol, this is so MMORPG

March 5th, 2006, 11:19 AM
xD People pay $200+ for Runescape accounts... RS Underground is awsome. 1 million GP goes for 15 dollars. ;o Gmail gives you 2500+ MB as opposed to hotmails itty bitty stuff and it's free. About sorting your contacts out, send a letter to everyone? Meh. :P Just a thought.

March 5th, 2006, 11:56 AM
Well yeah, but what about all the awesome junk mail I get? I won't get that anymore! :o
plus, I'll have to set up an ebay seller account, not sure what bank information I need to do that. Can't be too much judging from how many people sell really odd things on ebay... I'm seriously thinkin about it hehe

March 5th, 2006, 12:45 PM

March 5th, 2006, 12:47 PM
Well, i'm sure you can change your email address that's attributed to your live account. It would be stupid not to be able to.
So, just get a free gmail or hotmail account, change the live account to that email. Set up an ebay seller account (which isn't difficult, i use ebay a lot), and sell that sucker :P
Just an idea, have been browsing for a while, and thought i may as well chip in...

Does anyone know a way to copy my gamer profile to my memory card instead of moving it? I had my full auto file get curruted this weekend so now I am more paronoid about loosing all my time and effort into my score.
