from the in-game footage i've seen it looked more GTA 3rd person style and due to the fact you can roam towns in 4 x 4s - unless you can switch between the two modes but then again what i've seen is only a hint of what to expect from Alan Wake

Here's some stuff i can tell you guys which may clear a few things up - It's a survival horror, although not in the same way that Condemned was. You don't have to constantly survive, apparently. Instead, you are allowed to free-roam and with a mission based structure youcan then take on the nightmares. Like GTA - you'll encounter enemies while you roam the city, but in the missions you're asking for it.

It's third person from what i've seen of it - there's a few screens over the net showing Alan Wake at a garage where you have to find some missing keys. That's about all i know - after all, there's not a lot of info about the game going around right now.
