EDIT: OK, I finally beat it. Here are some tips I have...
- Use the second plane. Primarily for its health and power.
- Use the double blue laser the entire time. It helps big-time on the bosses. The other two weapons pretty much stink, IMO.
- Try and get on top of bosses to get the x16 multiplier if you know they're almost dead.
- Try and memorize the layout of levels and get up on enemies to get x16, too. The big B-52s or whatever they are and the big gray planes that drop the air mines tend to wait a while to start attacking. Immediately get right up on them and go for the x16.
- Besides getting extra lives every 500,000 points, there are three lives in the game you get by destroying red planes. They are on the second, third and final levels. The second level's sometimes didn't show up for me -- I think you may have to destroy all the tanks at the little road block area before you get there to get the red plane to show up. There will be a ton of gray planes coming from the right side of the screen. Take everyone out, because hiding in there will be a red one with the 1up. The one on the third level is after the little cutscene deal on the right. The one on the fifth level is at the very beginning at some point and it'll be on the left.
- Do not lose any lives on the first two levels! The Bodan is extremely easy. Don't use your bombs until all the little guns are firing directly at you so you don't get hit and die. Use your missiles and double laser right off the bat.
- Try to get an 'S' on Bodan. I got an extra life by doing that on the very first level!
- I didn't lose any lives on the second boss, either, or leading up to it. You don't really need bombs for this boss. Just use your missiles and laser. His weapons are really easy to dodge. Try and just make figure 8's or something while dodging him and he'll be done soon.
- On Poseidon, try and pick up as many bombs as you can. You're probably going to die once on him, but it's OK. Don't leave any bombs remaining! If you're about to die let 'em all go.
- When you get to the final section of Poseidon, use your bombs to kill all the little turrets around the big one.
- SIT ON TOP OF POSEIDON. He cannot hit you! If you sit right where that little thing spews out all of the purple bullets it won't hit you at all! Neat trick :)
- I believe on the next level there will be a train that spews mines and stuff. Don't even worry about trying to take it out. Just stay on the left side and find little holes in the bullet wall -- you shouldn't take much damage. It's either this level or the one before Poseidon.
- On the next boss you're probably going to lose a life just because he's such a ***** to get past since he basically has every kind of weapon -- especially those bullets that spew every direction. Try to only lose one life, though.
- The final boss is pretty easy. Try not to die leading up to him. It's good to have at least 3 lives (including the one you're currently on) because you'll get very frustrated and probably lose otherwise.
- Just sit on top of him at the front of the middle section. You'll be safe for quite a while if I remember correctly. Just keep spamming him with weapons.
I beat the game with 4 lives left over and 3,000,000+ points. It took me a LONG time to get used to it. I had to get really used to dodging bullets and trying to save all my lives. If you have a choice between health and bomb pickups, pick health if you have the double laser because you'll do more damage than just one bomb.
